Dogs. Dogs with attitude. Dogs with super powers. Dogs with a purpose. That’s what Jason Guinn gives us with his comic book series, Cockers: Ultimo Tales. Set in Mystic City, Cockers: Ultimo Tales follows the story of a band of super powered dogs known as the Ultimo Hounds, Ultimo the Ultra Hound, Blitzen the Lightning Hound, Bailey the Scented Wonder. Together, they protect the innocent from the evil forces that intend on taking over the city.

Cockers: Ultimo Tales was actually a pretty good read. I really didn’t know what to expect when I began my journey into this comic book. Thoughts of Krypto invaded my mind but once I started reading these comics I quickly came to realize that Krypto has nothing on this group of canines.

The story wasn’t overpopulated with nonsense. JM Guinn did a good job of not trying to force to much on the reader. The pacing of the story was right on. It was simple and to the point, not over fluffed with unnecessary hyperbole.

If there was one problem I had with this comic book it would be in relation to the artwork, or lack thereof. Don’t get me wrong, the overall character design was beautifully drawn. The grey scale toning added a very special touch to each character. My problem was with the lack of background scenes which sometimes made it difficult to get a full sense of the characters actions. On the other hand, the lack of background scenery meant that your eyes were focused on the characters and characters alone. If that is what JM Guinn was shooting for then he succeeded. Lack of backgrounds aside, this was still a beautifully drawn comic book.

I’m not sure where you can purchase this book but check out the link below for more information on this title.
