The Sunday Stroll for November 30th, 2008
What is The Sunday Stroll? What started out as a simple stroll around the internet via various links of interest has morphed into something more. Not only is the stroll about pointing you towards some of the more interesting stories on the internet, it’s a place where I take the time to rant or rave about some of the more recent happenings within the comic book and film industry.
I recently came across an article over at ComicBookBin.com that not only makes a lot of sense, it also rings true to this website as well. I’ve never had any negativity thrown my way from any publicist but I have seen plenty of emails go unanswered, yet my inbox too gets flooded on a daily basis with press releases, often times from the same publicist that do not have the courtesy to answer one of my emails. Because I asked to be added to their press release distribution list it does not bother me that I am receiving these press releases. What does bother me is that these publicist do not have the common courtesy to respond to my request. Even if they are not interested in what I have to say, a simple email response would be welcomed.
This doesn’t only relate to publicist but also writers. Several months ago, I contacted several writers directly about a new feature that I wanted to do here on ComicNews.Info. To date I have not received a single response and at this point I do not expect to. Maybe contacting these writers directly was not the proper route to take, but based on what I said earlier then you would understand why I bypassed the publicist.
In the grand scheme of things, these publicist do not owe me anything. No one forced me to get into this business. My passion for comics is what drove me to launch this website. I wanted a way to spread my passion for this meduim with others and this website is my way of doing so. So in case your wondering, no, I do not feel that I am owed anything by anyone in the comic industry but once in a while it would be nice of you to responded to an email or two.
On the flip side, when dealing with the public relation teams of the major movie studios it’s been golden, they are quick to respond to any request I may have. I may not always receive the answer that I am seeking but at least I get a response. In a time where comic book sales are dwindling you would think that these publicist would jump at the chance for assistance in getting their word out. Sadly, this is not the case. What these publicist need to realize is that when it comes to comic books, the internet is bigger that one or two websites.
Moving on………
Do you remember when Robert Kirkman made a plea to comic book creators in regards to creator owned books? It was a pretty hot topic for awhile, causing plenty of debate within the comic book community. It was a great debate that sparked the interest of Brian Michael Bendis. There was a lot of back and forth but there was one thing that was never really brought up, until now. Or maybe it was and I just missed it. That chart seems to put things into a little more perspective.
Courtesy of Artpatient.com I was pointed to an article titled, Breaking into Comic Book Writing, which was a very good read for those looking for a career writing comics. For those of you that have artistic talent, unlike some of us, and want some advice on becoming a comic book artist then this one’s for you. Finally, for those wanting to learn how to format a comic book script, that would be me, then this article may be of interest to you.
In recognition of the soon to be released The Dark Knight DVD, which will be hitting retailers on December 9th.
I’m looking forward to getting my hands on The Dark Knight DVD but I think I’m looking forward to this one a wee bit more. If only because of scenes like this…

And finally, I leave you with this. Jay Pinketon has taken some very old Spider-Man comics from the newspapers and added some new dialogue. There is some strong and suggestive language involved so consider yourself warned.
I’m out!
