The Sunday Stroll for January 25th, 2009
The Sunday Stroll for January 25th, 2009
by Gary Rodrigue, Editor-In-Chief
It looks like the poor economy has claimed more jobs in the entertainment industry as Warner Bros. recently announced the cutting of 800 jobs.
It doesn’t stop there though.
Top Cow has laid off two of its top employees, VP of Editorial Rob Levin and VP of Sales and Marketing Mel Caylo.
It doesn’t stop there either.
On Friday, DC Comics laid off Senior Editor Bob Schreck, which came as a huge surprise considering the fact that he is one of the top editors in the business. Guess it’s the nature of the business, good folks get canned while the ones who should have lost their jobs years ago somehow stay employed. I’m sure Bob Schrek won’t be out of work for long.
And it continues.
Diamond recently laid off thirteen employees and canceled their long running Diamond Dialogs magazine. I’m sure you have all heard the news of Diamond raising it’s minimums. It’s not a very popular decision but in these tough times I don’t think you can really fault Diamond for looking out for their own business.
I don’t know if it stops there or not but I’m done. It’s too damn depressing to keep going.
These are scary times that I believe will only get worse.
How can we help our neighbors and ourselves in these tough times? The next two strolls will tell us how.
Alterna Comics’ publisher, Peter Simeti, offers several ways that you can help your local comic book shop, and possibly yourself, during these tough and turbulent economic times. Very good stuff!
Are you looking for some basic marketing tips for promoting your project or business through social networking sites? This site offers some basic tips on what NOT to do when going the social marketing route.
If you have any suggestions on how we can help each other out in these tough times I’d like to hear them.
I’d also like to do what I can to help small press & Indy publishers. If you have press releases, preview pages, interested in being interviews or anything else that will help you get your work noticed let me know and we at ComicNews.Info would be happy to help you out! That’s why we are here!
Must mark calender. Episode 17 of Smallville. Zatanna. You see, wishes do come true!
Finally, I bring you a story of hope. President Obama is being credited with saving a New Jersey comic book shop and he didn’t have to sign an executive order to do so. His appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #583 and its multiple printings is the only thing that was needed.
I wonder when Obama will get his first ongoing comic book series?
