Gary Rodrigue of ComicNews.Info recently had the opportunity to speak with Zenescope’s January 2009 Girl of the Month, Victoria, regarding a variety of topics.

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself, so our readers can get to know you?

Sure! My name is Victoria and I’m one of the biggest nerds on the planet. LOL. Aside from being a cosplayer, I love to read and collect comic books. I’m a major bookworm & love to curl up with a good novel. Video games is also a hobby along with writing poems & short stories, doll collecting and baking.

I don’t know, I may have to challenge you for biggest nerd on the planet but I’m sure you can take me in the baking department, of course I do make a mean carrot cake. So, when it comes to comics which ones are on your must read list?

Ooh maybe we should have a bake off! LOL My favorite comic titles are Superman/Batman, Grimm Fairy Tales and Zenescope’s Wonderland series. I was following Supergirl religiously but lost track of it. My favorite story lines are the Batman HUSH story arch, Batman and Son, Black Adam Dark Ages mini series and Wolverine Origin.

Great comic choices and a bake off it is! How long have you been involved with cosplay and what got you started?

I began cosplaying in 2006 after seeing photos of amazing cosplayers on the web. I was so inspired that I decided to try it for myself. It looked like a lot of fun! The first character I choose to cosplay was Aerith Gainsborough from the video game ‘Final Fantasy VII’.

You were named Zenescope’s January 2009 Girl of the Month for your Calie Liddle cosplay. I’m sure that was quite an exhilarating moment for you and I must say that your cosplay choice was excellent. What made you decide on that particular cosplay and what went through your mind when you found out that you had won?

I decided on Calie because of my love for the Return to Wonderland series; I thought it was wildly entertaining and incredibly well done. I fell in love with the character and was so intrigued with her experience in and out of Wonderland. I felt a great way to honor her was to cosplay her and do the best damn job I could. I already have dark hair so I did a makeup and photo test to see if I could pull off the look. I was happy with the results and decided to do a complete cosplay for the competition.

When I discovered I won the title for Girl of the Month I thought I was going to burst out of my skin! I’m not sure if words can express what I was feeling; it was pure shock, happiness, excitement, pride…it was awesome and I got the news the day before my birthday! I immediately began texting my friends and family to give them the good news!

You now have the opportunity to take your cosplay a step further with a chance to be crowned Zenescope Girl of the Year. What can you tell us about the contest and how can fans help you achieve that ultimate victory?

Zenescope will be choosing a new girl each month until the end of 2009. From what I understand, once all twelve girls are chosen there will be an online vote to determine which of the twelve will win Girl of the Year. It is completely decided by the fans and the winner will accompany the Zenescope crew to the 2010 San Diego Comic Con.

So when it’s time to vote, fans can log onto www.zenenscope.com and vote for me! I would love to win this trip!

Your depiction of Calie Liddle is as perfect as perfect can be! You have truly raised the bar on your competition. I’m sure being named the Zenescope Girl of the Month has garnered you plenty of exposure. Has that had any type of impact on your life up to this point?

Thanks so much! My life has changed a little bit. Last year I launched my own cosplay site which showcases my various costumes and I have several online galleries. I have an internet following with my cosplay and it has tripled since becoming Girl of the Month. I get more hits, emails, fan art, requests and marriage porposals. LOL. This new level of exposure is wonderful though and gave me the opportunity to speak with you. I’ve also been getting feedback from people in the industry which blows my mind! I am very thankful and eternally grateful for all the kindness that has come my way. I feel like I’ve taken the next step and have reached a higher level. I appreciate everything everyone has done for me and all of the lovely things they say. I truly love my fans and am happy to gain more as the days go on.

So what’s next for you in the world of cosplay? Conventions? Cosplay choices?

I will be definitely hitting the convention circuit! I’ll be attending Wizard World Philly this year as I’ve done every year since the con began. I’ll also be attending some local conventions and will be attending Otakon and possibly the Big Apple Con in October.

I’m a showfloor model for a comic book store and will be attending special events dressed as Superhero characters. In the cosplay department, I really have my eye on Zatanna!

Zatanna, ooh great choice! What advice would you offer to those out there who are considering cosplaying as a hobby?

I think the best advice I can give to is to have fun with it. Select a character you know and love. If you pick a character you know nothing about, then what’s the point? Where’s the fun in that? Also choose someone you resemble and can bring justice to. If you’re not sure then conduct a makeup/costume/photo test. Accuracy is the key to a great cosplay!

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us and I wish you a world of luck and truly hope to see you crowned Zenescope Girl 2009. You’ve got the vote of ComicNews.Info!

Victoria is the nicest, sweetest person I’ve ever met. I’ve been lucky enough to have known her for 9 years now and I do have to say that she is one of the biggest nerds I know (in and out of costume). Can’t wait to read your columns.

    (Good luck baby!!)
