Digital-CAPtionS- “Angry Alien Productions”
by Jaymes Reed, Columnist

Since 2004, Angry Alien Productions has been producing VERY short animated films… using BUNNIES! The “30-Second Bunnies Theater… in which a troupe of bunnies parodies a collection of movies by re-enacting them in 30 seconds… more or less,” have been released at a rate of one per month since 2005.

“Bunnies Theater” premiers regularly on the Starz cable network (including Starz on Demand and their web site, http://www.starz.com), each film eventually making its way to the AAP web site at http://www.angryalien.com to join the library of over 50 animated short films so far.

AAP is the brainchild of 39-year-old Jennifer Shiman, who created the site in 1998 as a way to earn money through more creative ventures than her part time job allowed her (such as digital design, electronic production, illustration, web graphics and e-greetings). Upon the advent of flash software, she was better equipped to bring her animations to the masses, and thus, Angry Alien Productions was truly born!

Over the years, I have enjoyed “Bunnies Theater” immensely. My kids have grown up on the films, laughing uncontrollably on more than a few occasions at the funny bunny actors and their over-the-top acting skills.

The genres the bunnies cover vary widely from horror to comedy, from Sci-Fi to the occasional tear-jerking bunny tragedy.

This months addition to the library is “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” in which Bunny Khan wrecks havoc on the crew of the cottontail-sporting “U.S.S. Enterprise… their 30-second mission: to explore strange new worlds, seek out new lifeforms and civilizations and boldly go where no bun has gone before.” I noticed in the credits at the end that Erik Larsen lends his voice talents to the film. Even Bryan Singer has done work with the bunnies!

I’ve yet to view one of Jennifer’s films that I did not enjoy, but my absolute favorites, of course, are the ones relating to comic book movies. Included are short bunny versions of “Superman I,” “30 Days of Night,” and all three “Spiderman” films.

Other non-comic film parodies include “Christmas Vacation,” “Die Hard,” “Jaws,” “King Kong,” all three “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Star Wars,” and “Twilight.”

In addition to the films, you can scroll to the bottom of the home page where Jennifer offers up 12 links to other fun things she has going on, including outtakes, sketches, wallpapers and the hilarious “Bun-O-Ween Soundboard.” And don’t forget to visit the AAP store for all your “30-Second Bunny Theater” merchandise!

I should also mention AAP won the 2008 Webby Award and the 2008 People’s Voice Webby for Online Film and Video/Animation! We at ComicNews.Info wish a belated congratulations to Jennifer for these wonderful honors. Her work has brought much joy to this household. So go check out the site so she can bring some to yours, too!

Thought you were rid of me THAT quickly? No chance! In an attempt to stimulate a bit more fan interaction at this site, I want to start including a little thing at the end of “Digital-CAPtionS” from this point forward called “COMICS TOP FIVE.” I enjoy stirring the pot of debate, which isn’t hard for me to do since people rarely agree with anything I say anyway. So PLEASE leave comments, hate mail OR your own TOP 5!

For my first installment of this experimental David Letterman rip-off, I’m going to borrow from this articles main theme: Animation. And away we go:

TOP 5
Comic Book Cartoons of All Time:

1. Superman (1940’s Max Fleischer)
2. Super Friends
2. Batman: The Animated Series
3. The Tick
4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

See you next time, kiddies!

Keep The Vision,
Jaymes Reed

I had seen the bunnies’ riff on 30 Days of Night before- totally forgot how hilarious that was.

    for my five…

    the Fleischer Bros. Superman
    Super-Friends
    the Maxx
    G.I. Joe
    Spiderman & His Amazing Friends

with special kudos to the recent animated Wonder Woman movie, which actually was hyper-cool.

Agreed! I bought WW also and was VERY pleased with it. But this was a Top 5 for cartoons in the Saturday Morning sense. Maybe movies of the animated sort will be next :-)

Thanks for the shout-out! The bunnies & I appreciate it!

    For my top 5….
    1. G.I.Joe
    2. Transformers(the original series..not the new crap they’ve come out with)
    3. Thundercats
    4. He-Man
    5. X-Men Adventures

I agree, Gary. GI Joe went downhill with that Extreme crapola. The last good storyline was with Slaughter’s Marauders and the debut of Scoop; while Transformers went straight to hell just prior to that Beast Wars rubbish.
Thundercats, thankfully, never had a “fat Elvis” phase.
