Nicholas P. Myers, writer and artist of his self published comic book Harijan, is an old friend to ComicNews.Info, at one time gracing us with his own columns. In addition to Harijan, the massive Oasis spinoff story is also available online. Very old-school approachable, feel free to ask him yourself where to score a copy.
Nicholas recently answered a few questions for us as part of the newest feature at ComicNews.Info, “Checking in With…”, in which we ask some of our favorite creators a handful of questions related to comics.
His websites are: http://www.cadrecorner.com , http://www.comicspace.com/floatingislandpress and http://www.myspace.com/floatingislandstudios .
What projects are you working on right now?
Well, I’ve started working on a follow-up series to my Harijan mini-series. It takes place a few years after Harijan and introduces a few more characters and I’d like to make it an ongoing series of sorts.
I’m still trying to pimp the Harijan mini-series as well. I’m looking into possibly collecting them and reformating it as a graphic novel. I’ve got a few pages of addition artwork and I’m working on possibly
greyscaling all the art.
I’ve also started writing and illustrating a children’s book for my girls that I’d like to get published as well.
A couple creators and myself are in serious discussions on developing our own studios. It’s an awesome idea and if these other two guys are as tenacious and stubborn as myself, which it seems they are, we should get a lot accomplished. It would be a combination of all of our talents plus we would look at bringing in other artists and writers on different projects with us. It’s pretty exciting right now.
What goals, both short and long term, have you set for yourself at this
stage in your career?
I think my main goal right now is get ANA studios off the ground and running. I’d like to finish up the childrens book this year so I could use it a christmas presents.
My long term goal is really very simple. I want to be able to keep writing and illustrating my stories and have it be a sustainable habit. I’ll never be able to ignore my creative impulses but if I can turn around and show my family, “hey, look. My time isn’t being wasted.” That would be cool. Moderate success in the comic industry would be acceptable.
That and world domination, of course.
Looking to the future, where do you see the comic book industry five years
from now?
The future is kind of a muddy place for comics. Ever since the rise of webcomics, we’ve heard people crying out about the coming fall of print comics. But they’ve proved to be quite resilient. In fact, we’ve seen a lot of webcomics move over into print as collections.
I hope that print comics stay around for a while because there’s really nothing cooler than holding the latest issue of Spider-man or Superman or Savage Dragon and opening the cover to the first page to continue the story. There’s truly something mystical about it.
I think, if anything, we’ll see more graphic novels and a further rise in the web comics. I wonder if we’ll see an offshoot of the webcomics to a more serious type of storytelling that would fit in that media.
What’s the most rewarding experience you’ve ever had while working in the
comic industry?
The most rewarding thing is hearing other people compliment my work. Yes, I’m egocentric. Every artist or writer is. Of course we want to create something, but I think there is a deep root in that drive that we want our creation to be accepted and adored.
I’ve also had the opportunity to play mentor to a couple young artists and writers in my local area.
What is your dream project?
I think I’m working it right now with the development of ANA comics.
There’s the obvious fantasy of seeing my work in an animated or live action format, enjoyed by millions, but that can wait until next year.
Thanks for the time again.
