What projects are you currently working on right now?

I’m actually working on a real kick-ass project right now for the US Army! It’s an adaptation of sorts of the “America’s Army” video game. The new version of the game is due out soon, so we’re putting together a full graphic novel that follows the events of the game, but with all new characters I get to create from the ground up. But what’s really cool about it that it’s a very realistic look at what the life of a soldier, both female and male, is like in today’s Army. We’re showcasing many of the cool jobs that can become careers in and outside of the army. Not to worry, though, it’s got some really awesome action, firefights and amazing art by Mike Penick and Jim Brown. That’s coming really soon and check for updates to that on www.americasarmy.com and click on the AA3 link. The art is amazing and the story’s not half bad, either. (laughs) you can also check out my website (mzacharysherman.com) for updates on that one.

The other comic project I’m currently trying to find a publisher for is fun, super-hero dark comedy about Harry Walton, a Henchman for Hire. It’s a great look at what it takes to become a super-villain; from joining the henchman’s union, working for all the B-list idiot super-villains all the way up to the big boys. It’s co-written by Tom Martinek with fantastic art done by Matt Hebb. Funny, dark stuff! Look for that soon.

I’m also co-owner of a software company that’s doing games and apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It’s called JAZ Games and we’ve got three different items in the iTunes store already, so be sure to check us out at jazgames.com for all the cool stuff we’re working on. The trivia game is fun, but our sound fx generator has some cool graphics and original sounds.

What goals, both short and long term, have you set for yourself at this stage in your career?

At this point, I just want to write the best projects I can be a part of. I’d like to get a good run on a well-known title and really put a piece of myself into those characters, though. That’s satisfying and fulfilling. I like creating my own characters, for sure, but at the same time it’s fun to play with other people’s toys. DC and Marvel have some great characters that would be a blast to be a part of. I’d really like to work with Marvel again and would love to break into DC.

As for long-term, I’d like to work my way into being an editor.

Looking to the future, where do you see the comic book industry five years from now?

Wow, that’s a good question. I mean, I’m no Karnack or Nostradamus but I think it’s going to get a bit more streamlined. As we’ve seen with Diamond’s new policies, many of the little guys are going.

What’s the most rewarding experience you’ve ever had while working in the comics industry?

There are several different levels of that, so I think that’s a hard question. But mostly, having fans come up to you at the shows and say, “I came all the way to San Diego from Boston to meet you” is a real thrill and a humbling experience. It’s nice to know what you do is worthwhile and people like it. That’s most important as a creator and as a writer.

Having editors at different companies to see what you’ve done and to be impressed is also a big boost.

What is your dream project?

Hands-down, Superman. I grew up with the big Boy Scout and would love to be a part of that continuing history. Superman/Batman is a title I would love to write for. I’ve got great ideas for that one.

That, or The Punisher. Channel some of that old USMC Marine aggression into Frank’s frustration for the world. That’d be awesome.

Wow, think I could have picked two more diametrically opposed people if I tried? (Laughs)
