War comics are one of my favorite genres, surpassing even my beloved super hero genre. Growing up and still to this day, I am a major fan of such greats as Sgt. Rock, The Nam, and many other titles that chronicled the tales of daring behind enemy line rescues, ambushes, and many other harrowing horrors from the frontlines. It’s a genre that I’ve always enjoyed, not so much for the entertainment factor because war is definitely not entertaining, reading about it or experiencing it. No, I’ve enjoyed these types of comics because they give you a true perspective on the harsh realities of life and sometimes we need something like this to open our eyes, to remind us that life isn’t simply about Starbucks and the 10 o’clock movie.

With war comics being pretty much non-existent today, many having died out in the eighties, it was a delight to get my hands on a copy of the DCC Horrors of War Anthology. I felt like Santa had come early.

DCC’s Horrors of War Anthology consist of 72-pages , featuring some very talented folk from the Washington, DC-based DC Conspiracy group. The stories populating the pages of this anthology range from comedic to heart-wrenching. Just about every angle of war that you can possibly imagine or never would have wanted to imagine is covered in this book.
In certain stories you can actually feel the pain and anguish that the misbegotten soul, stuck in a foreign land fighting a war he may or may not believe in, feels. The stories are deep and what was portrayed in these tales felt as real as if I were on the frontlines experiencing first hand what these characters were going through.
Other stories provided a ray of hope, victory and a happy ending for the heroes depicted in these tales. As previously mentioned, the ranges of stories in this anthology are far reaching.

Not only were the stories deep but the illustrations had just as much depth to them. Ranging from melodic to rough sketches, the artwork complemented each individual tale to perfection.

This genre isn’t for everyone. It takes a special breed of fan to want to read these types of stories but if you’re looking for a book that is thought provoking and shows war in a way that the CNN’s and the MSNBC’s fail to cover then I highly recommend you put down that super hero comic and pick this one up. You won’t be sorry that you did.
