Have you ever wondered what it would be like to star in your very own comic book? Radio DJ’s Preston Elliot and Steve Morrison can answer that question. Zenescope Entertainment has just released issue two of ‘The League of Extraordinarily Stupid Gentlemen’, a humorous comic based on the radio personalities of Philadelphia’s number one morning show.

Victoria: For our readers who are not familiar with your show what can you tell us about the Preston and Steve show?

Steve: Preston and Steve show has been out Philadelphia for how many years?

Preston: We are in our eleventh year right now and we are at 93.3 WMMR. Our websites are wmmr.com and prestonandsteve.com. We’re basically kind of a pop culture driven morning radio show, very conversational. We all bring different things from our personal lives onto the air and we just basically bull sh&% for four and a half hours and have a really good time and invite the listeners to call in and be a part of our program. A lot of celebrity guests interviews, some stupid contests here and there, we give a lot of stuff away, stunts and just basically have a good time in the morning. We’ve been ranked number one in Philadelphia for coming up on four years so things are going well.

Victoria: Very impressive, that’s awesome. How did the project for your comic book come about?

Steve: It was Coates (Brian Coates). He was a fan of the show and contacted us. Came in, wanted to do some sketches of us, to take some pictures and we thought ‘Okay, sure.’ I’ve been to a few comic book conventions and met a number of comic book artists and it’s cool. It’s cool what they do. Preston and I are big comic book fans, graphic novels, love the art for it, love all stuff pop culture. Preston and I probably more than anyone else on the show key into that. He had a funny concept in mind; he was going to turn us into super heroes. He was a hard core fan of the show and that reflected in what he created for us. Preston has been known to eat his own scabs so he became Scabro. My opinion is to punch people in the throat if they talk during a movie.

Preston: So he’s the Hitman.

Steve: I’m the Hitman. Casey has this bizarre pimple under his armpit.

Preston: Yeah he thinks it’s from deodorant that he uses but its pus, it’s gross. Every now and then he’ll milk it thus came his name Milkdud which I think is the best character of the book.

Steve: We’ve joked about Nick being ambiguously gay so he is Big Rig because I use to joke that he would rig/hang at truck stops.

Preston: Right, unsolicited sex.

Steve: His power is if you are flirting with homosexuality he can tip you. And then Kathy has admitted on air one time that her gynecologist said because of her hygiene practices she has the perfect vagina.

Preston: Right.

Steve: So she has a perfect vagina and she’s Thunder Snatch.

Preston: Thunder Snatch, right. And if you ever see the perfect vagina you are basically paralyzed by its perfect form and she also can fly via queef. And Casey by the way, Milkdud, his power is he can ride like Iceman, he can create a trail and that’s pus coming out of his armpit.

Steve: You put it together and it looked great. It looked tremendous.

Preston: We saw the story boards and we were like ‘Wow, this guys artwork is pretty damn good.’ And the storyline was funny so he just gave us a sketch idea of it and we said ‘Dang run with it man. Yeah we’d love to do that, it’d been awesome.’ It’s an incredible honor to be put in a comic book weither it’s serious or not.

Steve: What’s cool is when they first did it up, his company, they did up shirts with our pictures as the characters on them and it’s awesome to do it. The first one was a big hit; it was at multiple comic book places and they were gone quickly. So the idea for a second one came up and I know he wanted to upgrade the quality of it so he was going back and forth a lot trying to get people to ink, trying to get people to up the level. We always like to up the level of whatever products we’re doing as it progresses from generation to generation. Couple people at Zenescope stepped in and helped it. I think the second one is vastly better than the first which is always great to begin with.

Preston: Yeah and it keys off of all kinds of subject matter that we’ve talked about on the show or catch phrases that have just become a part of the show. The villain of the second one is a monkey with James Mason’s brain. If you don’t know the show that’s pretty goddman obscure. He (Steve) does a James Mason impression that keys off of this other monkey reference.

Steve: It was a story that you had about how monkeys communicate and the level of how they communicate and I just started doing it. I thought a very intellectual voice would be James Mason. I had him talking about how he flings his feces on the air and it took off and it was a huge thing for us. People loved it so that’s incorporated into the comic book. Pierre Robert is now one of the main stars. Pierre is a legendary rock DJ in Philadelphia one of the absolutely revered DJ’s. His history in rock and radio is, everybody knows him coast to coast in radio. He’s that well known and that well revered so the fact that he does stuff like this is hilarious. His power is his hair which is still kept at hippie length but it cocoons him and he transforms into a superhero and then his hair has sort of a Doc Ock kind of capability.

Preston: Right. His name is Manerva and that came from the name of his VW bus which was Minerva. He actually had a name for it.

Steve: He drove it around San Francisco.

Victoria: Are there any other staff members that you would like to incorporate into the comic book?

Steve: Marisa who is also our producer. She’s tiny, she’s Tic Tac.

Preston: Yeah we call her Tic Tac.

Steve: So she’ll be in the next one. The more the merrier. I’d like to see Bill Weston who is our program editor. ‘Man About Town’ we call him.

Preston: Man About Town would have to be a king pin of some sort don’t you think? With a name like that!

Steve: I’d like to see Man About Town as a rip on one of the Watchmen characters. It’s just cool to see yourself rendered as a superhero and this one is funny, they’re well done. The proof is people that are not that familiar with the show read it and still enjoy it ya know but if you are a fan it makes it that much better

Victoria: Who are your favorite superheroes? What comics do you read?

Preston: Wolverine. Wolverine was always my favorite. I mean that’s what got me into collecting. As a kid I’d pick up Superman, Spider-Man stuff, Batman here and there, the X-Men, when I started collecting comics it was Wolverine that motivated me to do that. I was intrigued by the character and by all his powers and I just thought he was the most badass comic character I had ever read and then I started to gravitate towards other X-men that I really liked.

Steve: *cough* Gambit’s another one!

Preston: Gambit was another one of my all time favorites. Really didn’t like what they did with him in the Wolverine movie though. Needed to be more with the cards plus they didn’t give him his cool Cajun accent. I was bummed out about that.

Victoria: I don’t know what accent he had in that movie.

Preston: He had like a mild Southern accent.

Victoria: Yeah, it wasn’t quite Gambit.

Preston: No, not at all.

Victoria: I wasn’t feeling it.

Preston: Yeah and those are probably my favorite two Superheroes. How about you Steve? You have some favorites.

Steve: Batman. Batman badass Frank Miller Batman; conflicted, drunken. Dark Knight Christian Bale Batman. I like superheroes that don’t necessarily possess super powers but rise above. Iron Man is another one; Tony Stark. Wolverine’s another one. I love the conflicted but then on the other side I love the purity of Superman. Another one of my absolute favorites is Captain America.

Preston: For a while I liked characters that hardly had any real presence in the Marvel universe. I thought Domino was a cool character. There was a couple that I gravitated to, there was one called Boom Boom. They were really short lived characters you don’t see much of them. The hot chick stuff ya know, I like that too. Psylocke was really cool.

Victoria: Oh yeah!

Preston: Yeah, totally!

Steve: Who is the one who is always dressed in white?

Preston: The White Queen, Emma Frost. She’s hot.

Steve: *laughs*

Preston: Hey I like hot fake chicks! Fantasy land!

Victoria: *laughs* What did you think of the Wolverine movie besides Gambit?

Preston: I have the same opinion as Steve; good movie not a great movie. Worth seeing but not raving about.

Steve: I’d put it a tick up from the third X-men movie.

Preston: It was better than the third X-men movie I do agree.

Steve: It was the least of the three.

Preston: And somebody pointed this out to me; Wolverine he ended up getting slapped around too much I thought. In the comics, you know, he’s unstoppable he’s the best at what he does, he doesn’t take shit from anybody and there were so many times where he just got knocked across the room. I don’t know, I didn’t think they did the character as well as they could. You know who I liked though best in the movie even though he was barely in it in the beginning, was Deadpool!

Victoria: He was awesome!

Preston: The scene when he comes in and they start opening firing and he’s swinging those swords around I thought ‘That is awesome!’

Steve: He’s getting his own movie.

Victoria: Yeah he is and it’s going to be Ryan Reynolds face this time not that mummified version.

Steve: That was kinda cool, it looked cool but I wasn’t that thrilled with the way they worked that out. I love that Hugh Jackman is serious about Wolverine, love that they’re embracing it. Let’s see what the next one is like and let’s get a little truer to it. For me, for my money X2 is the best X-men.

Victoria: Definitely!

Steve: It’s the best and Nightcrawler!

Victoria: That opening scene in the White House, that was amazing!

Preston: Yeah we went to a screening of that and I think I was literally sitting on the stairs cause it was so full. We had to sit in the aisle but that opening segment, we all just looked at each other we’re like ‘F&*% yeah!”

Steve: You need a Brian Singer. You need someone with a bit of vision.

Victoria: He actually just gave an interview saying that he regrets leaving the franchise and he wants to come back to it.

Steve: Well he should. Not that the third, it was what, Brett Ratner?

Victoria: Yes.

Steve: It had it’s moments but you know, not enough.

Victoria: Yeah it wasn’t great.

Steve: But it’s just a great series. The first two are just mother f&%$#*s.

Victoria: Any information on the Dumb Wars, issue three (of your comic)?

Steve: No haven’t heard about it.

Preston: Of the what?

Victoria: Issue three, Dumb Wars.

Steve: Of our comic!

Preston: Oh I didn’t even know it was called the Dumb Wars!

Steve: You didn’t know that?

Victoria: *laughs* In the back of issue two it says Dumb Wars.

Preston: Oh I’m sorry!

Steve: All I know is that hasn’t been revealed. You (Preston) apparently are not as active in this one either.

Preston: Dude!

Steve: I know, I know!

Preston: I’m unconscious for most of the second book! I didn’t get any exciting things to do with my scab like powers. We have asked that Marisa be included that’s the one thing that I do know. I have no idea what her powers are going to be. Maybe she should be like an Atom type character where she shrinks down.

Steve: She drinks people to death.

Preston: Boozer! I love it!

Victoria; *laughs* That’s a funny idea. Maybe you can have a reporter in it named Victoria? Your own version of Lois Lane.

Preston: Yeah!

Steve: You gotta see her stuff, she was very sexy. She was Supergirl at the comic store.

Preston: Yeah I wanna see the pictures.

Victoria: Yeah I actually have a website with all of my costumes.

Preston: *goes to the computer* I gotta pull this up real fast.

Steve: I think that’s awesome. I love people who get into it and do good. You love it, you love this genre stuff.

Victoria: Yeah I’ve been reading comics since I was nine years old so yeah I love this! Thanks so much guys; this was a lot of fun!

*Note* Preston loved my Lara Croft pictures!

Many thanks to Preston and Steve who invited me out to the studio for the interview and were kind enough to let me sit in on the show. Thanks for an awesome experience! Check out their official websites:
