Many artists set up small businesses like a studio or a design company because they want to build a career for themselves. You are free to work with whomever you want and can get creative without someone looking over your shoulder constantly. Sounds like a great gig. Unfortunately, these small businesses don’t last to0 long and there’s two reasons for that.

Quitting too early. Many small businesses aren’t even around long enough to give it a chance to succeed. Sure, maybe the first few months aren’t exactly ideal to your standards but all companies go through it. It’s a matter of expecting it and surviving it. Plan to have a rough few months. Then when things are going well, you aren’t as disappointed. Also, even if you do have a great start always prep to have a slow moment because IT WILL HAPPEN.

No money. People usually budget to start a company but they don’t budget to maintain a company. Be prepared to dish out money when income from your company is not rolling in like you expected. Like I said, there will be times when your business is slow. Though it seems like you are losing more money than you are making money, this is not the case. It’s the simple fact that it takes money to make money.

When you feel that you aren’t getting anywhere, think again. Remember, this is your first step. The only way you are going to learn what is working for you is by trial and error. Have faith in yourself. When you do, others will too.
