The best way a business can keep their audience on their feet and always wanting more is by giving them new products. We are so eager to let everyone know that we are working on the next big thing that we start advertising without having a concrete plan. Instead of bringing your fans or customers closer to you, the opposite effect is happening.

First, we are giving our audience a false sense of hope. Thinking that they will be getting something soon, people wait for your next creation. But just how long are they waiting? In the consumer world, we are accustomed to knowing when we are going to get what we want. Remember when game consoles such as PS3 and Nintendo Wiis came out? We knew well in advance when to sit outside the nearest Best Buy and camp out all night. The best example of great marketing and promotions are movies. Production companies promote films 6 -9 months and even a year before opening day. This is because a marketing schedule had been planned before the film was even completed.

Secondly, you lose creditability. When you don’t deliver, people will not give you another chance. It’s hard to sell products or services when you have them. It’s harder when you don’t. The more you deliver stuff on time, the better chances you have of consumers trusting you.

Sometimes, things don’t pan out like we planned and delays happen. That book that you were planning to write may not be ready because of low funds or a family crisis. It’s ok. Good work should not be rushed. The worst mistake people do is give themselves a deadline because they started marketing before the product’s existence. The best way to approach a situation like this is wait for the product to be completed. Then have a release or publishing date. When choosing this date, make sure you give yourself room to promote and then work on the marketing schedule.

Do you have something coming out soon? If so, tell me how you are planning to market it.
